Democratic Gov. Janet Napolitano continues to hold a wide lead over GOP challenger Len Munsil, according to the Cronkite-Eight poll released Tuesday by Arizona State University pollster Bruce Merrill.
Napolitano leads Munsil 67 percent to 24 percent, with Libertarian Barry Hess receiving 1 percent of the vote. Napolitano's 43-point lead over Munsil is up from 36 points in the same poll a month ago.
Napolitano has maintained her strong crossover support among Republicans, with 46 percent of GOP voters saying they plan to vote for her; just 5 percent of Democrats said they'd cast ballots for Munsil.
"Republicans will tend to come back to their party's nominee as the election nears, so I expect the race to tighten a bit over the next two weeks," Merrill said in a statement. "However, the question for Munsil is still whether or not he has the time and money to overtake Napolitano's big lead."
In terms of ballot propositions, the poll said that Proposition 107, a proposal to ban gay marriage in Arizona, is trailing 56 percent to 30 percent.
If it failed in the Nov. 7 general election, it would be the first such amendment to fail at a state level anywhere in the country.
Voters also are siding with Proposition 201, a total ban on smoking in public places, as opposed to the more lenient restrictions offered by the competing Proposition 206.
The ASU/KAET-TV telephone poll of 1,019 likely voters was conducted Oct. 19-22. The margin of error was plus or minus 3 percentage points.
